Stjepan Filipović, partisan and Hero of Yugoslavia, gave a rousing speech seconds before his execution in May of 1942. His last words:
“Death to fascism. Freedom to the people!”
The photo was reprinted in the press around the world and brought a face to the resistance movement in Yugoslavia. History aside, you have to marvel at this guy’s courage. I would honestly cower like a baby if faced with Filipović’s fate.
